Overview
This is the custom programme page: where you book any length we do not sell as a fixed tour, whether nine, eleven, thirteen, fifteen, eighteen or twenty days. The rule is simple and never changes: 200 USD per day for two people, covering the private car with an Arabic-speaking driver and the hotel. Multiply the number of days by two hundred and you know the price before you ask: nine days is 1,800 USD, eleven is 2,200, thirteen is 2,600, fifteen is 3,000, eighteen is 3,600 and twenty days is 4,000 USD for two. What you read below is the full twenty-day route, starting in Tbilisi and looping through Kakheti, Kazbegi, Borjomi, Bakuriani, Vardzia, Kutaisi and its canyons, Svaneti and Batumi before returning. Any shorter trip is cut from this same route rather than built from scratch: we trim the furthest edges and keep the heart. Trip Itinerary
اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi and a first evening in the capital
Pick-up from Tbilisi International Airport at whatever hour your flight lands, transfer to the hotel and check-in. After a rest we go out for a light stroll rather than a full tour: Rike Park on the bank of the Mtkvari, a walk across the Peace Bridge, and a first dinner in the Old Town. Afterwards we sit for a quarter of an hour over the map and go through every day of the programme with you, keeping what you want and cutting what you do not, because this trip is cut to your measure from the first night.
اليوم 2: Day Two | Old Tbilisi: Narikala and Abanotubani
A full day in the old city. We ride the Rike cable car up to Narikala Fortress and the Mother of Georgia statue, then walk down along the wall into Abanotubani with its warm brick sulphur bath domes and the Leghvtakhevi waterfall at the end of the lane. We follow Kote Abkhazi street past Sioni church and the Juma Mosque. In the afternoon comes Rustaveli Avenue, the Parliament and the Opera House, then the Dry Bridge market for old Soviet curiosities. Dinner is beef khinkali, and the night is in Tbilisi.
اليوم 3: Day Three | Mtskheta the ancient capital, and modern Tbilisi
We drive 25 kilometres north to Mtskheta, capital of Georgia fifteen centuries ago. First up to Jvari church on the hill to look down on the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari, each river a different colour, then down to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral inside its stone wall. After lunch we come back to the capital from its modern side: the Chronicle of Georgia and its sixteen carved columns above the Tbilisi Sea, and the Mtatsminda funicular to the summit at sunset. A third night in Tbilisi.
اليوم 4: Day Four | Kakheti: Telavi and the Alazani valley
We head east about 150 kilometres to Kakheti, Georgia's farming basket. We cross the Gombori Pass and reach Telavi, stopping at the ancient plane tree and the fortress of Erekle II. We visit Alaverdi Monastery, its high eleventh-century church standing alone on the plain, and the gardens and tree-lined walks of Tsinandali estate. The whole view is the Alazani valley with the wall of the Greater Caucasus behind it. A country Kakhetian lunch, and the night in Telavi or Sighnaghi.
اليوم 5: Day Five | Sighnaghi, the town of love, and Bodbe
A morning in Sighnaghi, the walled town on a hilltop overlooking the entire Alazani valley. We walk the wall, some four kilometres long with twenty-three towers, and the lanes of carved wooden balconies. Then down to Bodbe Monastery among the cypresses, with its spring in the valley below. In the afternoon we drive back west to Tbilisi, stopping at roadside stalls for churchkhela and Kakhetian cheese. The night is in Tbilisi.
اليوم 6: Day Six | The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi
We head north on the most famous mountain road in the country. After 70 kilometres Ananuri fortress appears with its towers above the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir. We climb on to Gudauri and the Friendship Arch on the lip of a deep valley at 2,000 metres, then the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres, the highest point on the road. We reach Stepantsminda in the afternoon, 156 kilometres from the capital, and stay two nights so that Kazbegi is more than a passing stop.
اليوم 7: Day Seven | Kazbegi: Gergeti and the Truso valley
A full day in the mountains. In the morning a 4x4 takes us up the dirt track to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 metres, standing alone before Mount Kazbek, which rises above five thousand metres. In the afternoon you choose between the Dariali gorge with the Gveleti waterfall near the border, and the Truso valley with its coloured mineral springs and abandoned stone towers. We return to Stepantsminda in the evening for a second night; the air here after dark is half the experience.
اليوم 8: Day Eight | Down south: Gori and Uplistsikhe
We leave the mountains on the same road as far as the Mtskheta junction, then turn west. The first stop is Gori and its fortress on the hill in the middle of town. Ten kilometres further lies Uplistsikhe: an entire town carved into sandstone thousands of years ago, with halls, cellars, pagan temples and a secret stairway down to the river. We continue in the afternoon to Borjomi, arriving before sunset, and settle into the mineral water town among its pine forests.
اليوم 9: Day Nine | Borjomi and its national park
A quiet day after two mountain days. We walk through Borjomi Central Park along the Borjomula river to the mineral spring and drink the water warm at its source, as Georgians have done since the nineteenth century. The park cable car lifts us to the ridge above the valley. In the afternoon we move to the Likani district at the gate of Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park for a short walk under the trees. A second night in Borjomi.
اليوم 10: Day Ten | Bakuriani: the mountain in every season
We climb 30 kilometres south to Bakuriani at around 1,700 metres. In winter it is a family ski resort with gentle slopes, a children's ski school and horse-drawn sleds. The rest of the year it is pine forest, bike trails, meadows and a ride on the historic narrow-gauge Kukushka train towards Tsemi. We take the chairlift up to the Didveli summit for the valley view. We return to Borjomi or stay the night in Bakuriani, depending on the season.
اليوم 11: Day Eleven | Rabati Castle and the cave city of Vardzia
We drive south to Akhaltsikhe and the restored Rabati Castle, where an Ottoman mosque, a church, a synagogue, gardens and a museum all sit inside one wall. Then about 60 kilometres along the narrow Mtkvari river gorge to Vardzia: a twelfth-century monastery cut into an entire cliff, hundreds of rooms over thirteen levels, a church with preserved frescoes and tunnels linking the floors. We drive back in the evening and stay in Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi.
اليوم 12: Day Twelve | Kutaisi and Prometheus Cave
We head west to Kutaisi, Georgia's third city and capital of the ancient kingdom of Colchis. We visit Bagrati Cathedral on Ukimerioni hill and nearby Gelati Monastery with its twelfth-century frescoes and mosaics. In the afternoon comes Prometheus Cave: lit galleries running more than a kilometre between stalactites and stalagmites, the visit ending by small boat on the underground river. In the evening we walk to the Colchis fountain downtown and spend the night in Kutaisi.
اليوم 13: Day Thirteen | The Martvili and Okatse canyons
Canyon day. We start at Martvili Canyon, riding an inflatable boat between narrow stone walls hung with ivy and small waterfalls, under the suspension bridge where princes once bathed. After lunch we move to Okatse Canyon and its steel walkway, some 780 metres long and around 140 metres above the valley floor. Anyone wanting more adds the nearby Kinchkha waterfall. A second night in Kutaisi.
اليوم 14: Day Fourteen | Up into Svaneti: Zugdidi, then Mestia
The longest driving day of the programme, and one of the finest. We head north-west to Zugdidi and the Dadiani palace and museum, then begin the climb alongside the turquoise Enguri reservoir on a winding road cutting into the Caucasus. We reach Mestia in the evening at around 1,500 metres, where the stone Svan defensive towers still stand between the houses exactly as they were built centuries ago. A Svan dinner and the night in Mestia.
اليوم 15: Day Fifteen | Ushguli and the Svan towers
We drive 45 kilometres east by 4x4 to Ushguli, one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in Europe at around 2,100 metres, with Mount Shkhara at 5,193 metres rising in front of it. The road is unpaved and slow but passes villages preserved exactly as they were. On the way back we ride the Hatsvali chairlift for the view over the peaks, or visit the Svaneti history museum in Mestia. A second night in Mestia.
اليوم 16: Day Sixteen | Down to the Black Sea: Mestia to Batumi
We leave the mountains southward on the same road to Zugdidi, then turn for the coast. What makes this day is the contrast: you begin the morning at 1,500 metres among snow and stone towers and end it at sea level among palm trees. We stop on the way at Paliastomi lake or at the tea and honey stalls in Guria. We reach Batumi before evening, check into a hotel facing the sea, and eat a first Adjarian khachapuri in its own city.
اليوم 17: Day Seventeen | Batumi: the city and the boulevard
A full day in Batumi. The Argo cable car lifts us from downtown to Anuria hill, and the whole waterfront appears with the coastline running to the Turkish border. We come down into the old town, Piazza square and the wooden Orta Jame mosque. In the afternoon comes Batumi Boulevard, some seven kilometres long: family bikes, the Alphabetic Tower, and the moving Ali and Nino statue whose two figures pass through each other at sunset. In the evening the waterfront Ferris wheel, then the night in Batumi.
اليوم 18: Day Eighteen | Adjaran countryside: waterfalls and the botanical garden
We leave the city for the mountains behind it. First the Botanical Garden at Green Cape north of Batumi, a whole hillside dropping to the Black Sea with paths through plants brought from three continents. Then the inland road to the arched stone Queen Tamar bridge over the river, and the Makhuntseti waterfall, where you can step into the cold water. Lunch is Adjaran country food: cheese, honey, corn and bread from a stone oven. A second night in Batumi.
اليوم 19: Day Nineteen | East again through the Rikoti Pass
We leave the coast in the morning for a drive of about 370 kilometres east through the Rikoti Pass and its new tunnels, which have cut the journey considerably. This is a comfortable road day, not a crowded one: stops at the honey, churchkhela and mountain cheese stalls near Khashuri, a long lunch, and time to sleep in the car. We reach Tbilisi in the afternoon and check in, leaving the evening free on Aghmashenebeli avenue or the riverbank. The night is in Tbilisi.
اليوم 20: Day Twenty | Shopping day and departure from Tbilisi
The last day belongs to whatever you are taking home. We start at Tbilisi Mall on the airport road for international brands, then Dezerter Bazaar for spices, walnuts, mountain honey and Georgian tea, and the gold and leather shops around Aghmashenebeli avenue if you wish. We go through your tax refund paperwork before the airport and repack the cases in the car. Transfer to Tbilisi International Airport at whatever hour your flight leaves, even if it is three in the morning.
