There is no "best hotel in Tbilisi" — only the right hotel for your particular family. The difference between a comfortable stay and an exhausting one comes down to six things: the district, what "family room" actually means in Georgia, breakfast, the lift, where the car can stop, and noise. This page teaches you to judge a hotel yourself before you pay, and it deliberately names no hotels.
The reason for naming none is simple: the excellent hotel of this season may change management next season, and availability differs with your dates and the number of rooms you need. The criteria last; the name does not. In our programmes we are the ones who choose the hotel within the price, and we choose it by exactly the criteria below.
First: the district, which is half the decision
Tbilisi stretches along both banks of the Mtkvari between hills, and distances there are deceptive: "500 metres from Rustaveli Avenue" can mean 500 metres uphill. Read the table below before you open any booking site.

A point specific to Gulf travellers: the main mosque in Tbilisi is in Abanotubani near the sulphur baths, at the southern edge of the Old Town. If Friday prayer matters to your week, make that distance one of your selection criteria.
Second: what "family room" really means here
This is the most misunderstood item of all. The prevailing European standard in Tbilisi is two adults per room, with a child added on an extra bed where available. A "family room" in many hotels means a room with a double bed and a sofa that folds out, not a suite with two bedrooms. Rooms connected by an internal door are rare in converted older buildings.
The practical result: a family of four or more usually needs two rooms, not one. Ask explicitly about three things before confirming: the maximum occupancy of the room, the child age accepted without an extra bed, and whether the two rooms are on the same floor.
Third: breakfast
Breakfast in Tbilisi hotels is usually a buffet: eggs in several forms, Georgian cheeses such as sulguni and imeruli, fresh bread, pastries, vegetables, tea and coffee. The point worth knowing is that the buffet may include pork sausage or cured pork on an adjacent dish. The answer is not to avoid the hotel but to ask in advance and agree what is served to your table. Most hotels handle the request without difficulty when it arrives before you do rather than at the breakfast counter.
Fourth: the lift, the parking, and where the car stops
Three details that are forgotten at booking and paid for daily:
- The lift: many boutique hotels in the Old Town are restored nineteenth-century houses with steep stairs and no lift. This matters with luggage and with elderly parents.
- Car access: Old Town streets are narrow, some one-way or pedestrian. If the driver cannot stop at the door, you walk with your bags or wait, every morning and every evening. A hotel on a main street with a drop-off point saves ten minutes twice a day.
- Noise: parts of Agmashenebeli Avenue and the Old Town have cafes running late. Ask for a room facing the internal courtyard rather than the street.
Fifth: the pool and the air conditioning
Pools are scarce in Tbilisi, and most of what exists is an indoor spa pool, mixed-gender. If a pool is a genuine condition for your trip, make it a condition on another city inside the programme, or a day at a water park, rather than something to hunt for in central Tbilisi.
Air conditioning, on the other hand, is serious. July and August in Tbilisi pass thirty degrees easily, and the city sits in a valley that traps heat. Confirm the room has real air conditioning and not a fan; it is stated explicitly in the room description.
Sixth: apartment or hotel?

The rule we apply: fewer than five nights and a small party, take a hotel. A longer stay or a large family with children, an apartment-hotel in Saburtalo or Vake is usually both cheaper and more comfortable.

Why do you not name hotels?
Because management and availability change from season to season, and any name we write today may be wrong on your travel date. We commit to the criteria and choose the hotel when the booking is confirmed.
Which district is best for a family with small children?
Usually Saburtalo or Vake: wider streets, buildings with lifts, easier parking. The Old Town is more beautiful but the hardest with a pushchair.
Do four people need one room or two?
Two, in most cases. A single room in Tbilisi is designed for two adults and a child, not for four.
Is there halal food at hotel breakfast?
The buffet has eggs, cheeses, vegetables and pastries, and may also carry meats that are not suitable. Tell us in advance and we arrange it with the hotel before you arrive.
Is a hotel near the airport a good idea?
Only for the last night before a pre-dawn flight. The airport is about 17 km from the centre and there is nothing around it worth a day.
