Overview

This 4 day Georgia tour is the shortest route that still puts the capital and the high Caucasus in the same trip without turning it into a race. It suits a short break or a four-day stopover, and it suits the first-time visitor who wants to leave with two images rather than one: old Tbilisi with its lanes and sulphur bath quarter, and the Georgian Military Highway climbing to Stepantsminda at 1,740 metres. All three nights are in Tbilisi, so you unpack once. The rhythm is clear: a quiet first evening in the old town, then a full day in Kazbegi, then a morning in Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, and an afternoon on the Narikala cable car and in the Meidan bazaars. If you would rather sleep in the mountains themselves, read Kazbegi and the Caucasus Travel Guide or look at Kazbegi and Caucasus 4 Day Tour. An Arabic-speaking driver matters on this particular route: 157 mountain kilometres each way, leaving before the crowds, and arranging the 4x4 up to Gergeti are all settled in one sentence instead of half an hour of gestures. Trip Itinerary

  1. اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi and an old town evening

You are met at Tbilisi International Airport and driven to the hotel; the airport is about seventeen kilometres from the centre, under half an hour. After a rest we start in the evening at Meidan Square in the heart of the old town, then walk across the glass Bridge of Peace over the Mtkvari river to Rike Park. The walk passes the Abanotubani quarter with its brick domes and rising sulphur steam, and ends with a Georgian dinner in one of the old town restaurants. A deliberately short first evening so you begin the next day rested.

  2. اليوم 2: Day Two | A full day in Kazbegi on the Georgian Military Highway

An early start north on the Georgian Military Highway, one hundred and fifty-seven kilometres to Stepantsminda. The first stop is Ananuri fortress above the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir, then a steady climb to Gudauri and the circular Friendship Monument with its coloured murals above a deep valley. We cross the Jvari Pass at two thousand three hundred and ninety-five metres and drop into Stepantsminda, where a local 4x4 takes you up the steep track to Gergeti Trinity Church at two thousand one hundred and seventy metres facing Mount Kazbek. Lunch in the town, then back to Tbilisi in the evening.

  3. اليوم 3: Day Three | Mtskheta in the morning, Tbilisi in the afternoon

A morning in Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, only twenty kilometres from Tbilisi. We climb first to Jvari Monastery on the hilltop to see the clear line below where the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers meet in two different colours, then descend to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral inside its stone wall and walk through the craft market beside it. In the afternoon we return to Tbilisi and ride the cable car from Rike Park up to Narikala fortress and the Mother Georgia statue, then walk down to the Meidan bazaars for gifts and dinner in the quarter.

  4. اليوم 4: Day Four | Sameba Cathedral, the Dry Bridge market and departure

A light morning built around your flight time. We begin at Holy Trinity Sameba Cathedral, the largest church in Georgia, with its wide grounds and view over the city, then move to the Dry Bridge market for antiques, silverware and old pieces, the best place for a last gift. If there is time for a final coffee we sit on Shardeni street before collecting your luggage from the hotel. Transfer to Tbilisi International Airport with extra time allowed for the road and check-in.
