Overview
This 6 day family snow tour rests on one idea: a child does not need the highest mountain, only the easiest snow. Bakuriani sits at about 1,700 metres, its Didveli and Kokhta slopes are wide, short and gently pitched, and the air is kinder than in Gudauri, which starts above 2,200 metres; the difference between the two resorts is set out in Gudauri or Bakuriani: Comparing Georgia Ski Resorts. The trip uses only two bases: two nights in Tbilisi and three in Bakuriani. The transfer between them is not a long day in the car: half of it is spent on the narrow-gauge Kukushka train that climbs from Borjomi to Bakuriani over an old iron bridge while the car follows with the luggage. Mountain days are short and split to the children's pace: a ski lesson in the morning, sledging or tubing after it, then an early return to the warmth. Trip Itinerary
اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi and a short, warm evening
You are met at Tbilisi International Airport and taken to the hotel. Most Gulf flights land at night, and winter in the city means long dark evenings and temperatures around freezing, so we keep the first evening short and sheltered: a twenty-minute walk along the Mtkvari river where Rike Park and the glass Bridge of Peace are lit, then dinner at a restaurant near the hotel with hot Georgian bread and soup. An early night so the children start the second day with full energy, since the rest of the trip is spent in cold air.
اليوم 2: Day Two | Old Mtskheta and the Narikala cable car
A Tbilisi day built for small feet. In the morning we drive just twenty kilometres to Mtskheta, the old capital: Jvari Monastery on the hill above the meeting of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, where the two colours of water stay separate for several metres, then Svetitskhoveli Cathedral inside its wall. After lunch we return to Tbilisi and ride the cable car from Rike Park up to Narikala fortress, a few minutes in a glass cabin that children enjoy more than any church. We finish at Meidan bazaar buying churchkhela and Georgian sweets, and return early to the hotel.
اليوم 3: Day Three | To Borjomi and up on the Kukushka train
We leave Tbilisi after breakfast, heading west about one hundred and sixty kilometres to Borjomi via Khashuri. We arrive before noon and have lunch in the town, then leave the car and the luggage with the driver and board the narrow-gauge Kukushka train at Borjomi station. It crawls uphill for about two and a half hours on a line more than a century old, through pine forest and over an iron bridge attributed to Eiffel's workshop, a ride children remember far longer than any road. We meet the driver at Bakuriani station and check in before dark.
اليوم 4: Day Four | First snow day and the ski lesson at Didveli
A day almost without the car. In the morning we go up to the Didveli area, where the wide beginner slopes sit close to the base, and start with an instructor: an hour or two is enough for a seven-year-old to stand up and stop on their own. Anyone who does not want to ski stays at the neighbouring sledging area or tries the short tubing lane. A warm lunch at the base cafe, then an early return to the hotel in the afternoon, because half a day is the most a child really tolerates in the cold, not a full one.
اليوم 5: Day Five | Kokhta, Mitarbi and a horse-drawn sleigh
A second mountain day, on the other side. We ride the Kokhta gondola towards Mitarbi, where the runs are a little longer and the view opens over pine forest, and whoever finished yesterday's lesson tries a full descent from the top. Parents who do not ski take the same gondola up and back for the view alone. In the afternoon we return to the village for a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh along the snow-covered road, a simple twenty minutes that ends the day quietly, then dinner in Bakuriani and a last night in the mountains.
اليوم 6: Day Six | Borjomi park and the return to the airport
We come down from Bakuriani after breakfast: thirty kilometres of bends bring us back to Borjomi. This time we walk into the Central Park without hurrying and drink from the warm mineral spring that comes out of the ground at its own temperature and salty taste, and pass the facade of the Romanov palace at Likani. Then one hundred and sixty kilometres to Tbilisi, and if time allows we call at a mall for any remaining gifts. Transfer to Tbilisi International Airport with a comfortable margin before the flight.
