Overview

This 8 day Georgia winter tour puts the country's two best-known snow resorts in one trip precisely because they are not alike. Gudauri, in the north, starts at about 2,200 metres and reaches 3,279; its runs sit above the treeline, wide and fast, and suit a confident skier. Bakuriani, in the south-west at around 1,700 metres, has shorter, calmer runs among the pines and ski schools used to working with children. This programme is written for the mixed group: a father or brother who wants the hard mountain, and a family who want snow without fear, each getting what they came for instead of compromising. The order is three nights in Gudauri, then an overland transfer of some two hundred and ninety kilometres south through Mtskheta, Gori and Borjomi, two nights in Bakuriani and a last night in Tbilisi. Trip Itinerary

  1. اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi and a settling-in night

    You are met at Tbilisi International Airport and taken to a hotel in the centre. The first day is short because the long trip starts tomorrow: rest, then a limited evening walk to the Mtkvari riverside and Rike Park, and a warm Georgian dinner near the hotel. We use the evening for something practical: going through each person's skiing level and boot sizes, because this programme serves very different skiers, and it is better to have the equipment reserved in Gudauri before we go up than to stand in a rental shop the next morning.

  2. اليوم 2: Day Two | Up to Gudauri via Ananuri

    We leave Tbilisi after breakfast, north on the Georgian Military Highway, one hundred and twenty kilometres climbing the Aragvi valley. The main stop is Ananuri fortress, with its towers and two churches above the Zhinvali reservoir, then we pass through Pasanauri where the White and Black Aragvi meet. We reach Gudauri before noon and check straight in. The afternoon is for preparation: renting equipment, a trial run on the slope near the base to gauge levels, and deciding who goes up to the higher sectors tomorrow and who stays on the easy runs.

  3. اليوم 3: Day Three | The full mountain day in Gudauri

    A full day from the first lift. Confident skiers ride up to the Sadzele sector at 3,279 metres, where no tree breaks the view and the runs are long and open; a whole morning can go into repeating one descent. Anyone less sure stays in the Kudebi sector with its wide blue runs or takes a lesson with an instructor. Lunch in one of the mountain huts overlooking the valley. In the afternoon there is a second line for the stronger skiers towards the quieter Kobi side, then back to the hotel after the lifts close and dinner in the resort.

  4. اليوم 4: Day Four | A split day: the summit for those who want it, the valley for those who don't

    This is the day that justifies the whole programme. Whoever wants the mountain spends the morning on the upper slopes with no pressure from waiting for anyone. The rest of the group takes the car to the Friendship Monument just above the resort to see the coloured 1983 mural on the lip of the gorge, then tries the tubing lane at the base or rides the gondola up and back for the view alone. The driver shuttles between the two all day. We meet for a late lunch, and the last Gudauri evening is for resting before the long road day.

  5. اليوم 5: Day Five | Overland from Gudauri to Bakuriani

    The longest day of the trip, but a day of visits rather than only driving: some two hundred and ninety kilometres from the north down to the south-west. We come down the Military Highway and stop in Mtskheta at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, then head west along the motorway to Gori, Stalin's birthplace, with its fortress on a hill in the middle of town. Lunch in Khashuri, then we turn south to Borjomi and stop in the Central Park to drink the mineral water at the spring. The last thirty kilometres are bends climbing to Bakuriani, and hotel check-in.

  6. اليوم 6: Day Six | Bakuriani's other face: Didveli and the ski school

    The difference between the two resorts shows in the first hour. The Didveli runs are shorter and more gently pitched, ending at a base with cafes and ski schools that work with children every day, and the lower altitude means kinder air for anyone who struggled in Gudauri. Beginners take their lesson in the morning; stronger skiers use the day for long comfortable runs through the pines rather than speed. In the afternoon the sledging and tubing area serves everyone who does not ski, and we go back early. Dinner in the village and a night in Bakuriani.

  7. اليوم 7: Day Seven | Kokhta and Mitarbi, then down to Tbilisi

    A last snow morning on the other side of the resort: the Kokhta gondola up towards Mitarbi, where the runs are a little longer and the view opens over the forest, with the option of a short horse-drawn sleigh ride in the village for anyone who has had enough of skiing. After lunch we drive down to Tbilisi, about one hundred and ninety kilometres and roughly three hours. Check into the city hotel, then a free evening in the Old Town or at one of the malls for gifts before the departure day.

  8. اليوم 8: Day Eight | A Tbilisi morning and departure

    The last day is built around your flight time. If there is enough of it we take you to the Abanotubani quarter and its sulphur baths, the best possible ending to a week of skiing, or up to Narikala fortress by cable car from Rike Park to see the whole city before you leave. A final stop at the Dry Bridge market or a spice shop for anything still missing. We collect the luggage from the hotel and transfer you to Tbilisi International Airport with a comfortable margin.
