The three classic routes
Tbilisi to Batumi distance and time
The Tbilisi to Batumi distance is about 370 km, realistically 5.5 to 6 hours with a private driver and one short stop. The highway is being upgraded at the time of writing and some sections are single-carriageway with trucks, so leave in the morning to reach Batumi before sunset. For the city itself, read Arabic Driver in Batumi.
How far is Kazbegi from Tbilisi
Kazbegi is about 155 km from Tbilisi but takes three hours, because the Georgian Military Highway climbs to the Jvari Pass at about 2,395 m before dropping into Stepantsminda. The road is the destination, ending at Gergeti Trinity Church at about 2,170 m. A day trip means six hours of driving, so families prefer a night there; see Kazbegi and the Caucasus: A Day Trip Guide from Tbilisi.
Tbilisi to Bakuriani via Borjomi
Tbilisi to Bakuriani is about 190 km in three hours, passing Borjomi at about 160 km. Make Borjomi the lunch stop, then climb another 30 km in 45 minutes to Bakuriani at about 1,700 m. In winter this is the easiest road to the snow.
Airports and how far they are from the cities
Your driver waits in arrivals after passport control at all three airports. Tbilisi airport is about 17 km from the centre, 25 to 35 minutes. Kutaisi airport is about 20 km from the city; the Kutaisi airport to Batumi transfer is about 160 km, two and a half hours. Batumi airport is 15 minutes from the boulevard hotels. Name signs and late flights are covered in Tbilisi Airport Transfer with an Arabic-Speaking Driver (Kutaisi and Batumi too).
Mountain roads in winter
From December to March two roads need care. The Military Highway to Gudauri and Kazbegi can close for hours after heavy snow; our drivers check it every morning and, when needed, swap the mountain day with a Tbilisi or Mtskheta day. The road to Mestia, about 460 km from Tbilisi in 8 to 9 hours, is always split over two days with a night in Kutaisi or Zugdidi, and is not a winter road unless you are going there to ski. The Borjomi and Bakuriani road is lower and rarely closes, our winter choice for families. Never make Kazbegi day your departure day.
Arranging your cities on the map
The most common mistake is trying to see everything in five days. What works: four days, Tbilisi plus a night in Kazbegi, as in Georgia 4 Day Tour - Tbilisi and the Caucasus. Seven days, Tbilisi, the mountains, then Batumi via Kutaisi so that you never drive the same road twice, the logic of Georgia 7 Day Tour - Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Batumi explained in 7-Day Georgia Itinerary: Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Borjomi. Ten days adds Borjomi and Bakuriani or Kakheti, as in Georgia 10 Day Grand Tour. Children travel better with a stop every 90 minutes. If you are considering driving yourself, read Renting a Car in Georgia or Hiring a Driver? An Honest Comparison first: a first drive in Georgia usually adds an hour to every leg.
The driver and the price
A car with driver in Georgia is priced per day for the whole car: sedan 85 USD for up to three passengers, minivan 100 USD for six, van 140 USD for eight, Sprinter 240 USD for twenty. The car price is fixed all year and includes fuel, tolls, parking, the driver's lodging and the airport transfers, so a long distance costs nothing beyond the daily rate. A sedan for seven days is 565 USD after the 5% discount; a minivan is 665 USD. To price your trip, work out the cost of your trip; cancellation terms are on the terms page.
Intercity transfer prices for those not booking a driver for the whole trip
