The Georgian Military Road links Tbilisi to the village of Stepantsminda (widely known as Kazbegi) over about 156 km, which a car covers in three to three and a half hours without stops, or a full day with them. The known objective is Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 metres, with Mount Kazbek at 5,054 metres behind it when the sky clears. This guide explains the road stage by stage, how you actually get up to the church, and when the pass may close.
The road itself is the trip. It was cut in the early nineteenth century along an old caravan route that climbs beside the Aragvi river and then drops north along the Tergi, and today it is national road S3, ending at the Larsi border crossing. Anyone who treats it as a fast transfer between two points loses half the day.

Look at the elevation column: you climb 1,900 metres and then drop 600 within three hours. That, not a change of season, is what explains how much the weather shifts within a single trip.
Gudauri, the arch and the high pass
Gudauri sits on an open slope at 2,200 metres. It is Georgia's main ski resort in winter and a viewpoint in summer. Its cable car lines run seasonally, and the best known is the one that crosses the mountain to the village of Kobi, from which the Caucasus range opens out in front of you. The Friendship Arch stands a little past the resort on the edge of the drop: a concrete half-circle built in 1983, its underside covered in coloured mosaic, with the valley falling away beneath it. This is the most photographed point on the whole road, and the wind there is strong even in August.
Then comes the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres. Here the road runs through avalanche galleries, and those galleries are themselves the evidence that this place is serious in winter.
Stepantsminda and Gergeti church: how you actually get up
This is the most practical section on the page. Gergeti Trinity Church was built in the fourteenth century on a shoulder of mountain at 2,170 metres, about 430 metres above the village. The way up is a rough mountain track of roughly 6 km, and an ordinary saloon car cannot climb it. You have exactly two options:
- A local four-wheel-drive vehicle from the village square: about twenty minutes each way. This is a separate local vehicle from your programme car, and your driver arranges it on the spot.
- Walking the old trail through the woodland: about an hour and a half to two hours up, less coming down. The path is clear but climbs continuously, and it does not suit small children or older travellers.
Mount Kazbek stands behind the church, but it hides behind cloud on many days. Early morning is usually clearer than midday, which is a good reason to sleep in the village rather than return the same day.
Beyond the church
Most visitors turn back after Gergeti. Anyone who stays an extra day opens three directions:
- Gveleti waterfall and the Dariali gorge, about 10 km north of the village toward the border: a short stop, then a walk of roughly twenty minutes to the falls, and in the gorge a modern monastery under vertical rock walls.
- The Sno valley and Juta village to the east: the serrated Chaukhi mountains, with the final stretch of road rough and needing four-wheel drive.
- The Truso valley from Kobi: mineral springs, travertine terraces and abandoned stone towers. The valley is a border zone requiring advance registration and a suitable vehicle, so it is arranged a day ahead, not on the morning itself.
Weather and what to wear
The simple rule: subtract ten degrees from Tbilisi. When the capital is 32 degrees in August, Stepantsminda is in the twenties and the Jvari Pass is colder still, and the wind at the arch makes it feel lower than the number. Carry an extra layer on every visit, however the morning looks.

When the road closes and what we do about it
The section between Gudauri and Kobi is the sensitive one. The roads department closes it temporarily during heavy snowfall or avalanche risk and reopens it after clearing, and passage may be allowed only to vehicles fitted with winter tyres or chains. Nobody can promise you the road will be open on a specific date, and nobody can promise snow on a specific day.
What we do in practice: we check the road status on the morning itself, and if it is closed we swap the day for another destination and move Kazbegi to a later day in the programme where the length allows. That is exactly why we never place Kazbegi on the last day before departure.
One day or an overnight?
Out and back in a single day means more than 310 km and six to seven hours in the car. It is possible and often requested, but it squeezes the time at the church to a minimum. A night in Stepantsminda buys you a clear morning, and Gveleti or Sno the following day.
