Ten days rest on only four bases: three nights in Tbilisi, two in Kakheti among the vineyards, two in Stepantsminda under Mount Kazbek and two in Batumi, so you unpack four times in ten days and sleep two nights at every stop after the capital. Trip Itinerary

  1. اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi and into the suite

    You are met inside the arrivals hall at Tbilisi International Airport; we take the luggage and complete hotel check-in before you reach the lift. The airport is seventeen kilometres from the centre. We schedule no visit at all today: you have just flown, and the time is for rest and resetting your clock. In the evening, if you feel like it, we drive half an hour along Rustaveli Avenue and past the Opera without getting out. Before the night ends we agree tomorrow's departure hour and confirm the next evening's dinner in your name.

  2. اليوم 2: Day Two | Tbilisi: Sameba, Rustaveli, the treasury and a supra with singing

    The first capital day, and we start late. Holy Trinity Cathedral, Sameba, on Elia hill with its wide grounds, then down to Rustaveli Avenue: the parliament building, the Opera and the Rustaveli Theatre facades. After lunch we go into the treasury of the Georgian National Museum, where the gold of the Colchis kingdom and jewellery over two thousand years old are kept; it is a small section, best seen slowly in an hour. In the evening a traditional Georgian supra at a table booked in advance, with Georgian polyphonic singing, a reservation rarely available on the same day.

  3. اليوم 3: Day Three | The Dry Bridge market and the Chronicle of Georgia at sunset

    A second Tbilisi day with no long walking. In the morning, the Dry Bridge flea market near Dedaena Park for antiques, silver and old watches, then Chavchavadze Avenue in Vake for those who want the international shops, with the driver moving between the entrances for you. Lunch, then a break at the hotel. Before sunset we drive up to the Chronicle of Georgia on a hill near the Tbilisi Sea, huge bronze pillars tens of metres high carved with the story of the kings, and the slanting light is their proper hour. We finish at Turtle Lake looking over the city.

  4. اليوم 4: Day Four | Crossing into Kakheti: Sighnaghi and Bodbe

    East today, into wine country. About one hundred and twenty kilometres by the quiet Sagarejo road to Sighnaghi, the town of love on a hill inside a four-kilometre wall with twenty-three towers, its balconies looking over the Alazani plain to the wall of the Caucasus behind it. Lunch inside the town, then nearby Bodbe monastery with its garden and tall cypresses. We reach our Kakheti base late afternoon, and the evening stays quiet at a hotel among the vines with nothing planned, because tomorrow belongs to the cellars and the estates.

  5. اليوم 5: Day Five | Tsinandali and a qvevri cellar closed to you alone

    A full Kakheti day. We begin at the Tsinandali estate with its English garden and historic cellar, which still holds bottles going back to the nineteenth century. Then the part that defines this programme: a private tasting in a traditional qvevri cellar, clay vessels buried in the ground, closed to your party alone, with the explanation translated into Arabic and shotis bread, fresh cheese, and grape juice and churchkhela for anyone who does not drink. In the afternoon we stop at Nekresi monastery above the plain, then return to the hotel for a long evening.

  6. اليوم 6: Day Six | From the vineyards to the Military Road and Gergeti

    A long transfer day taken slowly: west out of Kakheti, then north onto the Georgian Military Road, roughly four and a half hours with stops. We pause at Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, climb to Gudauri and cross the Jvari pass at 2,395 metres. Stepantsminda comes in the afternoon, to a suite whose windows face Kazbek directly. The private 4x4 goes up to Gergeti church before sunset, once the square has emptied, and anyone who prefers can walk back down the gravel track with the car following.

  7. اليوم 7: Day Seven | The Truso valley, or a helicopter over Kazbek

    Today is two options and we fix one in the morning according to the weather. The first: the Truso valley by 4x4, west of town, with orange travertine terraces built by mineral springs, a few thinly populated stone villages and the Abano tower, a valley no coach enters. The second: a helicopter flight over the Kazbegi valley and Gergeti church, arranged on prior request, charged separately and subject to weather and permits. The afternoon is unprogrammed: a terrace facing the mountain, tea and quiet, which in this place is part of the trip rather than a gap in it.

  8. اليوم 8: Day Eight | Down from the mountains and across to Batumi

    The longest road of the trip, and for that reason it carries no sightseeing: Stepantsminda to Batumi is about 450 kilometres and seven hours with stops. We come down the Military Road in the late morning, pass through Tbilisi, then head west on the highway through the Rikoti pass tunnels with a long lunch in Imereti. Guests who would rather not spend a day on the road can take a domestic flight from Tbilisi, with a car waiting at the airport. We arrive in the evening to a reserved dinner in the old town near the Piazza.

  9. اليوم 9: Day Nine | Green Cape and the tea slopes of Chakvi

    North of Batumi this time, not south. We start at the botanical garden on Green Cape, nine kilometres out, more than a hundred hectares planted since 1912 on a slope dropping to the sea, with Japanese, Mexican and Himalayan sections and paths overlooking the bay. We carry on to the tea slopes of Chakvi, where tea growing in this region began in the late nineteenth century. Fish lunch on the coast, the hotel spa in the afternoon, and dinner at a reserved table on the seafront.

  10. اليوم 10: Day Ten | Gonio fortress if you wish, then departure

    The last day is entirely flexible. If you want one final visit we drive fifteen kilometres south to the Roman fortress of Gonio-Apsaros with its walls and eighteen towers; if you would rather stay at the hotel until the last moment, the airport is only six kilometres away, a quarter of an hour. We handle check-out and the luggage, with a last stop for tea and honey if you want one. Transfer to Batumi International Airport at the hour you choose, and for anyone flying out of Tbilisi we arrange the drive back the day before.
