Overview

A complete ten-day family tour of Georgia built on one rule: only four bases, so nobody unpacks and repacks every night. It suits larger families and young children who tire of the road far faster than they tire of playing. Three nights in Tbilisi, two in mountain Bakuriani at 1,700 metres, two in Kutaisi as the base for the caves and canyons, and two in Batumi on the Black Sea. Each base carries a completely different kind of day: an old city and a water park in Tbilisi; a gondola, horses and pine forest in Bakuriani; boats inside Martvili canyon and Prometheus cave from Kutaisi; Makhuntseti waterfall and the Adjara countryside from Batumi. The longest single transfer in the whole programme is three hours. An Arabic-speaking driver is what actually makes this rhythm work: he knows which entrance is closest for a pushchair, stops at a mosque or prayer room on the way, and tells the kitchen a dish must come without pork and without alcohol before it is cooked, not after. Trip Itinerary

  1. اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi and settling in

    You land at Tbilisi airport and are met with a car large enough for the family and its luggage, then driven to the hotel for an early check-in where possible. The first day is for rest: sleep after the dawn flight and time at the hotel pool with nothing scheduled. In the late afternoon there is a short outing of no more than two hours to Rike Park on the bank of the Mtkvari and the lit glass Bridge of Peace, with a quiet walk along the riverside. Dinner at a nearby halal restaurant, then your driver explains the coming days and the agreed departure time each morning.

  2. اليوم 2: Day Two | Narikala fortress, the bath quarter and Sameba cathedral

    A full day in the heart of Tbilisi with short distances covered on foot. The cable car rises from Rike Park to Narikala fortress and the Mother of Georgia statue, then you walk down into Abanotubani with its low clay domes and the small Leghvtakhevi waterfall at the end of the gorge behind it. Lunch in the Old Town, then back to the hotel for two hours of rest and swimming. Late afternoon brings Sameba, the Trinity cathedral, and its wide grounds where children can run safely, plus the craft market on the Dry Bridge. An early dinner.

  3. اليوم 3: Day Three | The open-air museum, Turtle Lake and a water park

    A green day away from the crowds. The morning is spent at the open-air ethnographic museum above Turtle Lake, where real wooden houses were moved stone by stone from every region of Georgia and children can go inside and sit in them. A short climb then reaches Turtle Lake itself, with time to play on its shore. After lunch and a rest comes the part the children have been waiting for: an indoor water park on the edge of the capital near the Tbilisi Sea, with large slides and a dedicated toddler pool, and enough time to stay until evening.

  4. اليوم 4: Day Four | The Borjomi spring, then up to Bakuriani

    The first transfer of the trip: Tbilisi to Bakuriani, about 180 kilometres in three hours. Halfway you stop in Borjomi for the central park, drinking the warm mineral water straight from the spring, whose salty taste is a surprise children remember, and riding the short cable car up to the plateau over the valley. Then the mountain road climbs to Bakuriani at 1,700 metres and the air cools noticeably with every bend. You check into a hotel with an indoor pool and take an evening stroll through the town centre and its mountain honey shops.

  5. اليوم 5: Day Five | Bakuriani: the Kokhta gondola, horses and an adventure park

    A full day with no luggage and no road. In the morning the Kokhta-Mitarbi gondola climbs to a summit overlooking pine forest and the Trialeti range; in winter the slopes are under snow and sledges, in summer they turn into meadows and easy walking paths. Afterwards there is a short supervised pony ride for the children, then the adventure park with its low ropes built for younger ages. Lunch at a mountain restaurant and an afternoon rest. Later, the alpine botanical garden and small Tba lake on the edge of town, and an early dinner before tomorrow's drive.

  6. اليوم 6: Day Six | Down to Kutaisi and Prometheus cave

    The transfer to Kutaisi runs about 170 kilometres in three hours, descending from the mountain through Borjomi, Khashuri and Zestafoni. You arrive at midday, check in and rest. In the afternoon comes Prometheus cave at Tskaltubo, twenty kilometres away: a lit underground route close to a kilometre and a half long through stalactites, stalagmites and wide halls, held at around fourteen degrees all year, so light jackets are worth carrying for the children. You return in the evening past the golden Colchis fountain on Kutaisi's central square.

  7. اليوم 7: Day Seven | Martvili canyon by boat and Gelati monastery

    The best day for older children. In the morning you drive some fifty kilometres to Martvili canyon for an inflatable boat ride inside the gorge, between high stone walls and still green water, followed by a walkway suspended above the stream and a small waterfall at its end. After lunch you visit Gelati monastery, a UNESCO site with its old mosaics, shaded and quiet and right for an afternoon hour. Back to Kutaisi for rest and the pool, with dinner in the centre. For those who want more water, Okatse canyon and its hanging walkway is the alternative.

  8. اليوم 8: Day Eight | The short road to Batumi and half a day by the sea

    The last and shortest transfer: Kutaisi to Batumi, about 150 kilometres in two and a half hours, with a stop at the tea plantations along the way or in the coastal town of Kobuleti. Arriving before noon means half an extra day at the sea: check-in at a hotel on the boulevard, lunch and pool time. In the late afternoon you walk the seven kilometres of boulevard with its playgrounds spread along the path, then the dancing fountains on Ardagani lake after sunset and dinner on the seafront.

  9. اليوم 9: Day Nine | The Adjara countryside and Makhuntseti waterfall

    A day in the Adjara countryside away from the city. The road climbs east along the Adjaristsqali river valley, about thirty kilometres, to Makhuntseti waterfall, which drops some fifteen metres into a pool children can walk right up to, beside an arched stone bridge attributed to the age of Queen Tamar. Lunch is at a country restaurant where bread is baked in front of you over wood. You come back in the late afternoon for a rest, then spend a final evening in central Batumi: the Alphabet Tower, Piazza square and the moving statue of Ali and Nino.

  10. اليوم 10: Day Ten | The Green Cape botanical garden, then departure

    If your flight is in the afternoon or evening, there is one last visit to the botanical garden at Green Cape, nine kilometres north of Batumi, terraced above the Black Sea, with shaded paths that are easy for children and end at viewing terraces over the bay. If you fly in the morning, an hour on the hotel beach is enough. Bags are packed, you check out, and a private transfer takes you to Batumi International Airport south of the city, or driven back to Tbilisi if you depart from the capital, with a lunch and prayer stop on the way.
