Trip Itinerary

1. Day 1: The day | Jvari from above, then Mtskheta and Shio-Mgvime

   Ten in the morning, departure from your Tbilisi hotel; the road is short and there is no need to start early. We first climb to the Jvari church on the mountaintop: from its terrace you see the whole town of Mtskheta beneath you and the blue Aragvi meeting the dark Kura, the most famous picture of this region. We descend to Mtskheta and walk its cobbled streets to the great Svetitskhoveli cathedral with its walls and garden, then free time in the small market at its gate for churchkhela, jams, ceramics and local wool. An unhurried lunch at a riverside restaurant serving khinkali, grills and hot bread. After lunch we continue to the Shio-Mgvime monastery in a narrow, quiet valley, with its caves cut into the limestone and the silence adults love. Back in Tbilisi around four or five, and anyone who wishes is dropped at the shopping district or the old town instead of the hotel.
