Overview

This 7 day Georgia youth and adventure tour is for people who want to do something, not watch it through a car window. Seven days built on the activity itself: rafting the Aragvi at Pasanauri, paragliding over the Gudauri valley, ziplines and quad bikes at the same resort, Gergeti church climbed on foot rather than by car, then the west: the suspended Chiatura cable cars, Prometheus cave with a boat ride out of it, the rubber boats of Martvili canyon and the hanging walkway at Okatse. Four bases only: two nights in Tbilisi, one in Gudauri, one in Stepantsminda and two in Kutaisi, flying home from Kutaisi with no backtrack. Tbilisi evenings are part of the plan, not filler: the Narikala cable car after dark, the old town lanes and the cafés of the Chugureti district. Air and water activities depend on weather, operator conditions and age limits, and each has a fallback we fix in the morning. Trip Itinerary

  1. اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi and the Narikala cable car after dark

    You are met at Tbilisi International Airport and driven to the hotel, only seventeen kilometres. We keep the day light because tomorrow starts early, but a Tbilisi evening is not to be missed: the cable car from Rike Park up to Narikala fortress as the city lights come on, a walk along the ridge to the Mother of Georgia statue, then down through the old town lanes to Shardeni street. Dinner is khinkali somewhere that opens late. The driver runs through the week and says which days need sportswear and closed shoes and which day you will get wet.

  2. اليوم 2: Day Two | Tbilisi: Mtatsminda, Turtle Lake and the Chugureti district

    A city day done on foot and by cable car. We start with the Mtatsminda funicular, which lifts you to the plateau at about 770 metres, where an amusement park and a Ferris wheel sit on the edge of the mountain above the whole of Tbilisi. Then the Turtle Lake cable car and time to walk around the water. After lunch we cross north of the river into Chugureti: its painted walls, the old sewing factory turned into a courtyard of cafés and young shops, and its back streets. The evening is free in the centre with the car on call.

  3. اليوم 3: Day Three | Ananuri, rafting the Aragvi, then up to Gudauri

    North on the Georgian Military Road. A short stop at Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, then on to Pasanauri, where the White Aragvi and the Black Aragvi meet and run two colours in one bed. That is where today's activity is: rafting with a licensed operator, life jacket and helmet, and a safety briefing translated for you before you get in, on a stretch that suits beginners and changes with the water level and the season. Wear clothes that can get wet and shoes that tie. In the afternoon we climb to Gudauri at 2,200 metres and stay the night.

  4. اليوم 4: Day Four | Paragliding and zipline at Gudauri, then the Gergeti climb

    Morning is flying time because the wind is calmer: a tandem paraglide with a licensed pilot over the Gudauri valley with the Caucasus range in front of you, and for anyone not flying, the zipline and quad bikes on the resort slopes. All of it depends on the weather and we fix the decision in the morning. After lunch we drive about thirty kilometres north to Stepantsminda and climb to Gergeti Trinity church on foot through the forest, an hour and a half to two hours up to 2,170 metres. Night under the mountain.

  5. اليوم 5: Day Five | Gveleti waterfall, then Chiatura and the Katskhi pillar

    A short morning before a long road: an easy walk between the rocks to the Gveleti waterfall near the Dariali gorge, and a last look at Mount Kazbek. Then we head west about three hundred kilometres, breaking the drive at Chiatura, the manganese town where a network of suspended cable cars was built in the 1930s to carry miners across the gorge; some lines run today with new cabins directly above the valley. Nearby stands the Katskhi pillar, a limestone rock over forty metres high with a small church on top. Night in Kutaisi.

  6. اليوم 6: Day Six | Prometheus by boat, the Martvili boats and the Okatse walkway

    The heaviest activity day of the week. We start at Prometheus cave near Tskaltubo: over a kilometre through lit halls of stalactites and stalagmites, leaving by boat on the underground river instead of walking back, and it is cold inside, so bring a jacket. Then Martvili canyon, where the Abasha river runs turquoise between stone walls and several hundred metres of it are covered by rubber boat under small waterfalls. We finish at Okatse canyon and its metal walkway, hundreds of metres long and some twenty metres above the river. Back to Kutaisi.

  7. اليوم 7: Day Seven | A Kutaisi morning and departure

    A quiet morning to make up for yesterday. We climb Ukimerioni hill to Bagrati cathedral, built by King Bagrat III at the turn of the second millennium, with Kutaisi and the Rioni river below it. We come down to the central square and the Colchis fountain with its gilded figures copied from the jewellery of the Colchis kingdom, then to the central market for spices, churchkhela and honey. Kutaisi International Airport is fourteen kilometres west of the city, twenty minutes away, and anyone flying out of Tbilisi is driven back the same day.
