Overview

The Martvili Canyon and Okatse tour from Tbilisi is a long day to the finest water and rock in western Georgia: the narrow Martvili canyon with its turquoise water crossed by boat under walls draped in green, and the deep Okatse canyon that visitors walk above on an iron walkway hung in the air, ending at a jutting platform. About five hours each way, so it is a day for young travellers and for those who love the road and want the canyon photos without carrying their bags to a new hotel; for small families we recommend a programme that sleeps in Kutaisi: Georgia 4-Day Tour – Kutaisi and the Caves. Because the tour crosses the country to another region, its price is the Tbilisi–Martvili transfer price from our price table. The price is for the whole car, not per person, and covers the driver, fuel and road costs; it changes with the season and is confirmed on WhatsApp before booking. Entry tickets, cable cars and meals are paid on the spot. Comfortable shoes are advised, and spring to autumn is best.

Trip Itinerary

  1. Day 1: The day | The Martvili boat, then the hanging Okatse walkway

Seven in the morning, departure from your Tbilisi hotel; the road west is long and we want the canyon before the midday crowds. A breakfast stop at the roadside after two hours, then on to Martvili, reached near noon. In the Martvili canyon we walk the suspended path above the turquoise river among small waterfalls, then descend to the boat landing and take the rubber boat into the narrow canyon under the green walls for about a quarter of an hour, the day's best moment for photos. Lunch in a nearby country restaurant from the spicy Mingrelian kitchen known for its cheese bread and sauces. After lunch, half an hour more to the Okatse park and a twenty-minute forest walk to the start of the iron walkway hung on the canyon wall, followed to the platform jutting into the air above a drop of more than a hundred metres; anyone who prefers not to walk waits in the park café. Around four we set off back, reaching Tbilisi between nine and half past nine in the evening.
