Summer: the Black Sea and the peak season
Between mid-June and mid-September, Batumi becomes the centre of the trip rather than a stop within it. The seafront boulevard stays busy late into the evening, the cable car climbs to the Anuria hilltop above the bay, and the Batumi Botanical Garden about nine kilometres north of the city gathers plants from several continents on a slope that looks straight out to sea. These are also the months when midday Tbilisi is hotter than many travellers will tolerate, and the practical answer is to keep the capital for the first and last days and spend the middle of the trip on the coast or in the highlands.

Spring and autumn: the seasons most people overlook
