This 14 day Georgia tour is our longest fixed programme and the only one that reaches every touristic region in the country: Tbilisi, Kakheti, Kazbegi, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Imereti, Samegrelo and Adjara. What sets it apart is not the number of days but the fact that its travel days are content rather than transit: the Gombori pass to Telavi, Surami fortress on the westward road, and the Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi on the day you descend to the sea. It also holds what no other programme does — the cave city of Vardzia carved into a mountainside above the Mtkvari, and Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe. Trip Itinerary

  1. اليوم 1: Day One | Arrival in Tbilisi

    We meet you at Tbilisi airport and transfer to the hotel, about 17 kilometres. With two weeks ahead there is no reason to overload the first day: rest, then an evening walk down to Rike Park and the Bridge of Peace and through the lanes of Meidan with their carved wooden balconies. A first Georgian dinner, and then the full map with you: six towns you will sleep in, six regions you will cross, which days start early and which start slowly. If you land at night we move the walk to the morning.

  2. اليوم 2: Day Two | The heart of old Tbilisi

    We ride the cable car from Rike up to Narikala fortress and the Mother of Georgia statue on Sololaki hill, then walk down into Abanotubani with its domed sulphur baths and the Leghvtakhevi waterfall inside the gorge. Then Sioni church, ancient Anchiskhati and the Meidan bazaar, and across the river the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Sameba. The afternoon covers Rustaveli Avenue and Freedom Square, and the evening belongs to Mtatsminda, reached by funicular, where the whole lit city lies below you from 700 metres.

  3. اليوم 3: Day Three | Mtskheta, Jvari and the Chronicle of Georgia

    Only twenty kilometres north-west of the city lies Mtskheta, the old capital and the cradle of Georgian Christianity: Jvari Monastery on its hill above the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, each a different colour, then Svetitskhoveli Cathedral within its walls. After lunch we drive up to the Chronicle of Georgia above the Tbilisi Sea, with its carved bronze pillars, and if you wish we continue to Turtle Lake or the malls. It is your last night in the capital before we turn east. We suggest a short shopping run today, since every day from here on is outside the capital.

  4. اليوم 4: Day Four | The Gombori pass, Sighnaghi and on to Telavi

    A road day in the best sense. We head east and cross the forested Gombori pass at around 1,600 metres, with its switchbacks and long views, then drop down to walled Sighnaghi for a short visit: a walk along the ramparts, the view over the Alazani plain, and Bodbe Monastery below the town. After lunch we continue north to Telavi, the capital of Kakheti, where we stay two nights. In the evening we walk its centre around the Batonis Tsikhe fortress and the ancient plane tree on the square. Around 150 kilometres in total, split across three stops.

  5. اليوم 5: Day Five | The monasteries of Kakheti and the Tsinandali estate

    A full day around Telavi with short distances. We begin at the Tsinandali estate: the palace of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, its English garden, old trees and shaded walks. Then Alaverdi Cathedral, among the tallest of Georgia's ancient churches, standing alone in the Alazani fields. After lunch we visit the old stone academy at Ikalto and the twin monasteries of Old and New Shuamta in the woods on the Gombori road. Back to Telavi in the evening for dinner facing the plain with the Caucasus behind it. Driving adds up to barely sixty kilometres, making this the calmest day after arrival.

  6. اليوم 6: Day Six | From Kakheti onto the Georgian Military Highway

    We set off west in the morning, back over Gombori and around Tbilisi to the start of the Military Highway. The first stop is Ananuri fortress above the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir, with its walls and two carved churches, then a steady climb to Gudauri at 2,200 metres and a pause at the circular Friendship Monument above the valley. Beyond the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres we descend to Stepantsminda. About 300 kilometres today, half of it continuous scenery. Two nights at the foot of Mount Kazbek.

  7. اليوم 7: Day Seven | Gergeti and the Truso valley

    In the morning a 4x4 climbs to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 metres, with time to photograph and walk around the solitary stone church. Then we head west into the Truso valley, the longest mountain run in the programme: a dirt track up the valley past mineral springs that stain the rock orange, old stone defensive towers and half-abandoned villages. It needs a clear day and is cancelled for safety if the weather turns. We return to the village in the evening.

  8. اليوم 8: Day Eight | West to Borjomi by way of Surami fortress

    A transfer day to the south-west. We come down the Military Highway, swing around Tbilisi and drive west to Khashuri, stopping at Surami fortress on its hill in the middle of town — the traditional rest halt on this road, ringed by stalls selling the local bread. From there we enter the Borjomi valley between wooded mountains. In the evening, the Central Park and a drink from the warm mineral spring, plus the short cable car up to the plateau if time allows. Two nights in Borjomi.

  9. اليوم 9: Day Nine | Vardzia and Rabati Castle

    The day no other programme of ours contains. We drive fifty kilometres south to Akhaltsikhe for the restored Rabati Castle, which holds a mosque, a church and a madrasa inside a single wall. Then sixty kilometres more along the Mtkvari to Vardzia: a twelfth-century cave city cut into an entire cliff face, hundreds of rooms and passages and a painted church, attributed to Queen Tamar. You climb it by stairs and tunnels, so bring breath and comfortable shoes.

  10. اليوم 10: Day Ten | A Bakuriani morning, then Kutaisi

    In the morning we climb the thirty kilometres to Bakuriani at 1,700 metres: pine air, a chairlift up the Didveli or Kokhta slopes depending on the season, and a stop at the Kukushka narrow-gauge line and its old steel bridge near Tsagveri. After lunch we head west through Zestaponi and the Rikoti pass to Kutaisi, about 130 kilometres. In the evening, the Colchis Fountain on the central square and the White Bridge over the Rioni. Two nights in the city.

  11. اليوم 11: Day Eleven | Gelati, Bagrati and Prometheus Cave

    An Imereti day. The morning is Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO site, for the mosaic in its apse and its painted walls, then small Motsameta perched above a bend in the river. After lunch we drive to Kumistavi village and enter Prometheus Cave: a long walk between stalactites and stalagmites under coloured light, at a steady underground chill, so a light jacket is needed even in August. We finish at Bagrati Cathedral on Ukimerioni hill at sunset above the roofs of Kutaisi. None of today's sites lie more than thirty kilometres from central Kutaisi.

  12. اليوم 12: Day Twelve | Martvili, the Zugdidi palace and the sea

    The Samegrelo day, and the one that makes this programme complete. In the morning, Martvili Canyon: a small boat between narrow stone walls on clear green water, with hanging walkways above. Then north to Zugdidi for the Dadiani Palace, seat of the princes of Mingrelia, with its garden and museum. After lunch we drive south down the coast through Kobuleti to Batumi. The evening is the boulevard: the Alphabet Tower, the moving Ali and Nino statue and Europe Square. About 230 kilometres for the day, across three stops and an unbroken coastal view.

  13. اليوم 13: Day Thirteen | The Adjara mountains and Makhuntseti waterfall

    We drive east up the Acharistsqali valley through terraces of tea and citrus, some thirty kilometres: Queen Tamar's arched stone bridge over the river, then the Makhuntseti waterfall pouring down right beside the road. Lunch is in an Adjarian country house, where the boat-shaped Adjarian khachapuri comes from. On the way back we skirt the edge of the Mtirala rainforest. The evening is Piazza square and its back streets, and gift shopping in Batumi's central market. The valley road is narrow and winding but fully paved, with no need for a 4x4.

  14. اليوم 14: Day Fourteen | The botanical garden and departure

    A last morning shaped by your flight: nine kilometres north to the Green Cape and Batumi Botanical Garden, terraced directly above the sea, walked downhill at an easy pace through its Asian and Mediterranean sections. Then the transfer to Batumi airport, six kilometres south of the city. If you fly from Kutaisi or Tbilisi we set off early with stops along the way. We check the luggage with you and say goodbye after fourteen days. If you prefer something quieter we take you to the boulevard for a last coffee facing the sea.
